Member of the Month - Redneck Princess
By By Heidi Cleveland
I would like to introduce you to our September Member of the Month, Kathy (Redneck Princess). Kathy has been a member of the Greenleaf forum since September 18, 2007. Happy one-year anniversary! Kathy may only be a relative newbie to our forum but she is a great person and always has something to give in the forms of advice, praise, and laughter.
Kathy has been married to her wonderful husband for 25 years. He understands her love of miniatures and even bought her the Magnolia for Christmas last year. Together they have three smart and talented children. Her two daughters are now adults and on their way to bigger and better things. Her son is a senior in high school and wants to be a writer. He even made items for her Adams on Mother` Day.
Kathy has loved miniatures her whole life. It started with her Mother’s collection of miniatures that she kept in her china cabinet. Kathy could not resist playing with them. Later in her childhood she received a metal dollhouse that had one electric light. She loved that dollhouse and says she probably went through a ton of batteries for it. She started making miniatures when she was in Junior high school. She and her friend would make room boxes out of shoeboxes and made everything to put in them. Unfortunately, one of their peers found out. They made fun of them for playing with dolls and that put an end to their creativity.
Kathy finds joy in the building process of dollhouses but feels that she probably more of decorator then anything else. She loves to rearrange the furniture in the rooms to see which pieces work best together. As for collecting, she only seems to be collecting kits at the moment. Kathy likes to dry fit her houses first. She says that is when the house tells her what it wants to be. It gets her mind working on how to make it happen. The only thing she really hates in the dollhouse process is sanding. She is fortunate to have a mouse sander but when it comes to all the little pieces it makes her crazy. The first time Kathy ever attempted working on a dollhouse she was nervous and excited at the same time. She doesn’t have any horror stories but she did get frustrated. She says that she doesn’t think she could have accomplished that first build, The Whitney, without the Greenleaf forum.
Kathy has one favorite dollhouse among all the rest that she will keep as long as she can. It is her Whitney. Her Mom bought a dollhouse kit to build for Kathy’s daughters. She was so excited about it and even talked about getting wallpaper for it. Not much later, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and knew that she would not be able to accomplish it. She gave Kathy the kit to build but unfortunately it ended up in the basement. Kathy did not have the time or the energy to deal with it at the time. Fast forward to Summer 2007. Kathy’s best friend, Chris (What2craftnow) bought an Orchid kit. She joined the Greenleaf forum and all her talk got Kathy’s interest in miniatures going again. So she went down to the basement to find the kit her Mom had given to her 10 years before. Flooding that had happened that spring ruined it. Kathy was devastated to say the least. Chris found a Whitney online and bought it for her. Great friend! That was the most touching thing a friend had ever done for her. She has been addicted ever since. Other then the Whitney, Kathy’s other favorite treasure is a working mini train layout in honor of her dad. He had an amazing train layout.
Kathy’s miniature dream would be to get a big vehicle and have a Greenleaf road trip. She would pick up people along the way on the path to the wizard, Dean. Her ultimate dream dollhouse would have to be the Garfield. For the coming year she says she needs to organize. Me too Kathy! She is fairly new to this hobby but something she would like to attempt is working in smaller scales. She has a Fairfield waiting in the wings and she thinks it will be fun to try. Kathy’s advice for newcomers to our hobby is to just enjoy it. I cannot agree more.
Kathy was very surprised to be September’s Member of the Month. She thought she probably would not have much to offer because she is so new to the hobby. I think she was perfect.

For participating as Member of the Month, Kathy will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Greenleaf Store.
