Member of the Month - Meet Corwin!
By Heidi Cleveland
I live in New England. The majority of us that live here tolerate winter for the most part. When those first peeks of Spring start to show, I become very happy. This time of year is glorious. I get to enjoy all the harbingers of Spring; bird song, daffodils, and the Greenleaf Spring Fling. Ahhh! Heaven.
So I decided to have one of our resident Spring Chickens become our subject for this month. I would like to introduce you to our April Member of the Month, Corwin.
Corwin is a great miniaturist and a wonderful person to know. He blends in so well with all of us Roosters and Hens on the Greenleaf forum.
Corwin just celebrated a birthday this past month and he is now 20 years old. He lives in Canada with his parents, his sister, and his two nephews. He also has family members of a different type in his life. He has a hamster, a multitude of fish, and Buddy. Buddy is a Russian wolfhound/Collie mix that is also a member of the forum. Corwin loves the wilderness but he is happy that he lives in the city. Unfortunately, there is not a miniature shop to be found. He is grateful for the internet because he can do all of his shopping, meet new people, and share his eye-candy with all of us. He is employed at Petsmart and enjoys it very much.
Corwin became proactive when it came to his first dollhouse. He was eleven years old and needed someplace to store his toys. So he set about building a very large Victorian mansion completely out of foam core. I would have loved to seen this myself but he says that it is long gone now. Over the years he has built another foam core house, a Lunby, an Aster, several room boxes, and two hand built houses.
Corwin loves all aspects of miniatures. He likes the part of building. That can be seen by his ability to build whole houses out of foam core. You have to really love the craft to be able to see a big white piece of foam and envision a mansion! He builds his own furniture as well as purchases higher end pieces to make his homes look just right. He also loves to decorate. The first time Corwin started to build his first dollhouse, he was very eager but still very *green*. It was his first foam core house. The ceilings were twelve inches on the first floor and six feet on the second. He admits that he has improved much since then. Corwin has all the miniature bases covered. Completing a house is his favorite part. That is when he can fill it with his treasures. He does admit that the one thing he dislikes about the build is electrical. Ceiling lights make him want to scream.
Corwin has come to the realization that many of us have. You love so many dollhouses but your real life house is only so big. His dream is to have a large enough space so that he can build all the houses of his dreams. Corwin would love to learn beading and wood carving in miniature. He has never attempted either but one day he will give it a try. He would also love to one day attend one of Rik Pierce`s workshops.
Corwin has steadily been working on his favorite dollhouse, The Garfield. He is very attached to this house and it is his forever dollhouse. If you look in Corwin`s gallery pages you can see the detailed work and bashing that he has done to it. Corwin, I am afraid of my Garfield (still in box) so you are my hero because you are adding more complexity to it then there already is! Bravo!
Corwin has become a Deb Bed addict like many of us. He could not choose a favorite miniature because he has two. His Deb Bedroom set and or Deb living room set. I think since they are both made by our very own Deb, that all her pieces can be considered as one.
Corwin`s advice to any newbie dollhouse addicts is this: You can think small but build big. Never settle. Get what you want, it`s your mini!
You can view all of Corwin`s cavity inducing eye-candy in his gallery.
For participating in the Member of the Month, Corwin will receive a $25 gift certificate to the Greenleaf Store.
Happy Spring!
